DocVault gets inline document viewing, site search, tags, and manual sort order

Two releases worth of updates have landed in DocVault — and between them they cover a gap that came up repeatedly in competitor research: making document libraries easier to navigate and organise.

What’s new in the free plugin

View documents without downloading

PDF and image files now show a View button alongside the Download button. Clicking it opens the file in a new browser tab using the browser’s native viewer — no download forced, no third-party embed. Other file types continue to download as normal. Use

to hide the button if you don’t need it.

Documents appear in WordPress site search

There’s a new toggle in Settings → Search: enable it and documents appear alongside posts and pages in WordPress search results. Access restrictions are respected — documents set to logged-in or role access are excluded from results for users who can’t view them.

Document descriptions

Documents now have an optional description field. In the frontend list, a small toggle button appears next to the title — clicking it expands the description inline without a page reload. In the DocVault block, the description renders directly below the file info.

Filter dropdowns

The frontend shortcode now supports three optional filter dropdowns alongside the search box: category, file type, and tags. Add whichever you need:

You can combine them freely. The type filter only lists types actually present in your library.

Document tags

Documents now support a flat Tags taxonomy — useful for cross-cutting labels that don’t fit neatly into a category hierarchy. Tags appear as a column in the admin list. Use

to pre-filter by tag, or combine with the tag filter dropdown above.

Manual sort order

Drag the handle column in the admin document list to set a custom order. The position is saved immediately. Use

on any shortcode to display documents in that order on the frontend.
